Sun Visors Falling, Too loose

The sun visors on my 1975 Buick LeSabre convertible keep falling down when I want them up. I’ve tried the following:

  1. I bought some GM plastic inserts ( GM part number 12337899) that go between the rod and clamp. They improved the tightness a little, but not enough.
  2. Tightened the clamp screws to maximum on the visors.
  3. I’ve tried stuffing other materials, like zip ties, paper, etc. between the rod and clamp.
Right now they have new GM plastic inserts because of all the things I’ve tried, they seemed to work the best. But still they fall.

Does anyone have any experience with this problem and a fix that works?

You can try wrapping the rod with electrical tape or velcro (see youtube). If you don’t mind the non-factory look, you can use a strong binder clip or screws to tighten the binding.

Same issue on a 52 Chevrolet vert. I think the rod is just worn over the years…the clamp portion is as tight as it will go. I’m contemplating ways to add material back to the rod, or, filing the split face (gap) of the clamp to allow it to close more.
